"So many memories and so little worth remembering, and in front of me — a long, long road without a goal..."
Have you ever wondered how your parents actually feel about you acting out of the line sometimes? Have you wondered that the generation gap doesn't quite measure up sometimes, giving rise to difficulties?
If you have, you'll be able to relate with this story ALOT.
If you haven't, well this may come as a surprise.
Fathers and Sons is a story, about this exact generation gap between a parent and a child. Views change, perspective differ, new era, new times, modern fictions, fresh and young blood... But blood is stronger than space and time, the bonds of blood and this, the novel proves!
It is a story about a complete "nihilist" man Yevgeny Bazarov and his friend, Arkady. It starts with these two being on the high air but as the story proceeds we see our protagonist, Bazarov's downfall. And the downfall came no sooner than the declaration of his love towards a character. So much so for Bazarov's nihilism that one ounce of love, and everything vanished into thin air.
This story is as beautiful as sad and I must admit, HATS OFF IVAN TURGENEV I did not expect such turnovers. This is a story not only beautifully written, but very well paced and explained.
I don't understand whether Love was the demise of our hero Bazarov or was it his own nihilism and belief into nothingness.
My viewpoint is, Bazarov opposed his own perspective, his own authority of nihilistic point of view as soon as he fell in love. That made him out of character and he was no longer the same old Bazarov with a maintained posture. His dignity took a serious hit, more than he can even imagine.
Arkady on the other hand was still optimistic. Though I must say he very keenly followed Bazarov and actually tried to personify himself like him but, that too fell apart as soon as he fell in love as well, funny isn't it?
This is easily one of the best story I have ever read. Its short, well explained, detailed and relatable to the younger generations of the overgrowing nihilists.
The ending CRUSHED MY HEART. Yes, it did.
