"A change in the weather is sufficient to recreate the world and ourselves."
Okay lets get to the point, THIS NOVEL WAS NOT AN EASY ONE. IT NEEDED TOO MUCH PATIENCE AND FOCUSING AND AT TIMES I LOST TRACK OF WHAT THE NARRATOR WAS TALKING ABOUT!!!
There is just so much to grasp that one can't even begin to fathom. This volume talked volumes and volumes of human behavior. Proust digs further deeper into the realm of the Parisian high society and obviously the "bourgeois".
The novel also damn well helps building the character of the narrator. The sudden loss, which even though quite estimated, shook the narrator. It also lays the ground work for the next volume and the forecasting of yet another big doom, Swann's illness.
Spoiler: The extremely shocking part of the novel was, the reaction of the Guermantes' on hearing about Swann's death. It seemed like, they had enough time to fidget about a sock and shoe rather than being concerned about a friend who is soon to hit the grave. That scene with M. and Mme de Guermantes was as much grave as hilarious. How beautifully Proust normalizes the grim situation.
The novel no doubt was one of the toughest one I've ever read and it was totally worth it. There is no lack of descriptions in Proust's novels.
I thoroughly enjoyed this novel.
Thank you for reading!!
